iOS 18:
A Game Changer for iPhone Users
Let's
start with features. I'm going to tell you about the features first, as there
are some features in the beta rollout. AI features are going to come in the
fall. They're going to come when the iPhone launches. I'm going to tell you
about them as well. But first, let's talk about the main features, and then
we'll talk about AI.
Design:
I'm
surprised that this was in Android 10 years ago, and now it's in Apple. But
it's exciting. You can now customize the home screen. This means that you don't
need an app on the top; you need it on the bottom and on the sides. You can
increase or decrease the size of the widget. You can also give a color tint to
the icons. You know that there were only 2 icons on the lock screen. Now you
can replace those icons. The control center is similar to the previous ones,
but it's changed.
Control Center:
The
icons are more rounded, and there's a big change in them. When you swipe up,
you get the media center. First, you get the control center, then the media
center, and then the connectivity options. So you can do everything in 1-2
swipes. Not only that, you can add the icons and controls that you want in the
control center. But that's not all; you can even keep 3rd party apps there.
That's crazy! I didn't think it was going to happen. You can also resize the
clubbed widgets for connectivity. The interesting thing is, when is it going to
come on Android? I think it's a rare occasion that I'm asking this. Let's wait
and watch.
Lock and Hide Certain Apps:
Hidden
folders have been on Android for a long time. You can hide apps on Android. But
now “iOS 18” has that feature. If you want to hide an app, you can long
press it and put it in the hidden folder. You can see it only when your face is
unlocked.
Photos:
The
photos app has been redesigned a lot. You get memories, and you can see the
photos of these people. And it groups them and shows them with their names. If
you go to Google Photos, it was there before. It's already in Google Photos,
and now it's in the iOS photos app. You can pin the photos you've taken to the
app. The photos app has changed a lot. It's much more user-friendly. You can
easily find the photos you've taken. It's sorted very well. It's sorted
according to events and holidays. So the photos app has become much more useful
and user-friendly.
Passwords:
Password
managers have been removed from “iOS 18”. It's been running on Android
for years. But now it's in iOS, and they've implemented it very well. They've
extended the iCloud "keychain" feature. It stores your credit card details,
addresses, and names in the browser. You'll get a face ID if you want to use it
again. You can now save your WiFi password and security code. Password manager
is also there, and it's a full feature.
Calculator:
The big
news is that the iPad has a calculator app. But the iPad has a calculator app
on the iPhone. It has Maths Notes now. You can write any mathematical
calculation, and it'll give you the answers. You can also do handwritten
calculations as it doesn't have the support of a pencil. 2 plus 2 is 4.
Messages:
Messages
have also been updated. If you want to wish a friend on his birthday at
midnight, you can schedule it. You can also support RCS in messaging. It hasn't
been rolled out yet.
Game Mode:
There's
a big update for gamers as well. Game mode is coming in iOS. You can control
the notifications on the game mode. And a feature that was present on our
feature phones is now in iOS.
Call
Recording & T9 Dialer:
T9
Dialer! This feature was frustrating in iOS. You had to press the button 3-4
times to make a call. But now you can type the T9 Dialer code, and the name
will pop up. You can touch it and call. It's a good feature. There's also a
call recording feature. There's no update yet, but you can now do call
recording on iOS. I think they've added this feature for Apple's AI.
There's
an Apple Vision feature now. You can calibrate your iPhone with your eye
tracking. You have to calibrate and look at different points. You can control
it with your eye. If you want to choose an app, you can look at it
continuously, and it'll open up. So there's an eye-tracking feature in “iOS
18”.
Flashlight Dynamic Island:
There's
another interesting feature, Flashlight Dynamic Island. You can reduce the
intensity of the flashlight when you turn it on. You can also adjust the focus
and the width of the flashlight. It's a small and interesting feature. It's not
available on any Android device. You can limit it to 80-90% charging. You
shouldn't go 100% though.
Apple Intelligence:
Now let's talk about AI. We've already seen a lot of features. They've just renamed them. But yes, it's there. I think Apple implements it very well. So I'm really looking forward to it. There's no update on it yet. But let's talk about AI features.
Apple Intelligence features. Siri now has ChatGPT integration. So
basically conversational text. Siri will pause when it talks. It'll talk more
like a human. So that's there. There's on-screen awareness. Knowledge base has
increased a lot. Just like ChatGPT gives you a lot of things, Siri will give
you a lot of things. With the AI update, Apple has shown one more thing. Who's
rich and who's poor. If you have an iPhone 13 or 14, you won't get the AI
features. Latest iPhone 15 Pro and above phones will get the AI updates. Which
means those who have 2 cameras in their phones won't get it. Look at your
phone; is it 2 or 3?
Genmoji:
You can create custom emojis. There's an image playground. Basically, it generates text prompts and images. So that's there. There's an "Image Cleanup" feature on the Photos app. It's called "Image Cleanup". So you can erase an object. If someone takes a photo, you can remove it. There's an integration with the Photos app.

You can create a memory with text prompts. You can also create a movie with a bunch of photos. For example, show me the photos of Barcelona. If you tell me, I'll create a movie with them. Text summarize and transcript. These are all coming in Android.
There are writing tools for proofreading. You can summarize key points. There's a spell checker and rewrite. You can do it in a professional and humorous way. You can do a lot of things like chatgpt.
But
there's one thing that stands out in Apple Intelligence. Everything is
happening on the device. Even if it's going out, it's going on Apple's private
cloud. Now, a lot of things that aren't on the device go to the cloud and come
back. But this goes to Apple's private cloud. So all the data that's there
stays in Apple's ecosystem and doesn't go out.
All
these features are coming in "iOS 18" this fall. If you ask me, you'll see all
these features in September when the iPhone launches. Because they'll
definitely talk more about AI in the iPhone launch. It'll be fun to do a
comparison in the coming days. What are the AI features in Android, and what
are the features in Apple? iPhone has always been great in hardware. In terms
of software, we used to say that it's boring and that Android features aren't
available in iOS. But that's also changing. And with AI, I think everything
else is also changing. The comparison that we used to say, that Apple is better
in iOS and software, we won't be able to say that. But I think, let's wait for
it. Maybe in the next 3-4 months, Android will bring more features. And then
again, the race is on!
